Years of experience in global communication have taught us some lessons that serve our clients well.  Here are a few tips for your organization's global communication needs:
  1. Learn to take off your native country's "blinders" and see through the eyes of your audience.
  2. Learn to eliminate slang, jargon and colloquialisms from your written and spoken communications.
  3. Watch out for humor -- it rarely translates well!
  4. Be very careful about references to news, sports or entertainment items that may not be familiar to your audience.  The "home team" may be quite different from what you're thinking.
  5. Be creative in thinking about the culture you will be addressing.  If possible, speak with the experts -- people who can tell you whether your materials are likely to hit the target or -- in the worst case scenario -- offend your audience.
