Years of experience in global communication have
taught us some lessons that serve our clients well. Here are a
few tips for your organization's global
communication needs:
- Learn to take off your native
country's "blinders" and see through the eyes of your
audience.
- Learn to eliminate slang,
jargon and colloquialisms from your written and spoken
communications.
- Watch out for humor -- it
rarely translates well!
- Be very careful about
references to news, sports or entertainment items that may not
be familiar to your audience. The "home team"
may be quite different from what you're thinking.
- Be creative in thinking about
the culture you will be addressing. If possible, speak
with the experts -- people who can tell you whether your
materials are likely to hit the target or -- in the worst case
scenario -- offend your audience.
